The Study: This research examined the prevalence and consequences of workplace incivility—low-intensity deviant behavior that violates norms of mutual respect. A total of 1,180 employees from a large U.S. university participated, reporting recent experiences with incivility and its effects.
Main Findings: A substantial proportion of participants reported experiencing incivility, which was linked to lower job satisfaction, higher stress, increased turnover intentions, and more negative perceptions of organizational climate. These effects held even after controlling for demographic and occupational factors. Despite its subtle nature, incivility can significantly undermine well-being and productivity.
Practical Implications: Organizations should address incivility proactively, recognizing its harmful effects. Prevention policies and training focused on respectful communication can help foster a healthier work environment.
